Greenland Hills was organized in 1941 by Rev. H.J.H. Ellzey, a graduate of Southern Methodist University’s School of Theology.  Arrangements were made with the Dallas School Board to use the Stonewall Jackson School as a temporary meeting place, and the first service was held on Nov. 9, 1941 with 26 people in attendance.

In March 1942, a one-block site on Penrose, between Delmar and Bremen, was purchased (for $2,250) with plans for post-World War II construction. Nearly four years later, in January 1946, Rev. W. Raymond Corrigan led the ground-breaking ceremony to begin construction of the $60,000 Austin stone church.

In 1947, the church was finished and began serving the rapidly growing East Dallas community. Originally built in modified Gothic architecture, the building has changed little over the years. In 1953, first floor classroom space was added, the attic was finished out and air conditioning was installed. In 1998, we modified the sanctuary by removing the drop ceiling to open the look of the ceiling.

While we treasure the beauty and historical significance of our church building, we realized that much of it needed repair.  In 2009, Greenland Hills began a fundraising campaign to expand the current building into a new facility, totaling approximately 4,700 square feet.  Glory Be Fellowship Hall and our new preschool opened in 2011.

Whether it was being created just as America was joining World War II, getting in the middle of local civil rights movements in the 1960s, protesting the Vietnam War, or creating a safe place of worship for its diverse members, Greenland Hills has always been a small church unafraid to be in the middle of a big issue. With about 200 families currently making up Greenland Hills, the church continues to be the intimate, caring, neighborly church it was created to be. We are a small church with big hearts, big plans and a big faith.
